Abstract

This study was designed to identify the relation-ship between the level of dependency and family sup-port of the elderly.
The subjects for this study were 72 elderly patients hospitalized in an university hospital in Chon-ju C ty. The data were collected from Feb. to 29, 19% by means of an interview utilized a structured quesgonnaire.
The instruments used for this study were an eldedy patients Dependency Scale developed by Nam (1992), and the Perceived Family Support Scale developed by Kang(19t35 ).
The data were analyzed by percentage, t-test. ANOVA and Pearson Correlation Coefficient using the SPSS PC+ program.
The results of the study were as follows ;
1. The mean dependency score of the elderly patients was 2.3 : the level of dependency was relatively low. The mean family support score of the elderly patients was 3.2 : the level of family support was relatively high. The relationship between dependency and family support w?s negative, but the correlation was not significant (r= 0. 1344, p=0. 136). Therefore the hypothesis that, "the higher the level of family support, the lower the level of dependency" was rejected
2. General characteristics relai !d to the elderly patients¢¥ dependency were age, sex, education, religion, occupation, personality, spouse survival status, person residing together, supporting responsibility, the most reliable and supportive per-son, social activity and pocket money(p<0.05). General characteristics related to the family sup-port of elderly patients were personality, pocket money, duration of hospitalization(p<0.05).
As shown in above results, it is important to consider the general characteristics related to dependency and family support. In caring for elderly patients, therefore, nurses must establish care plan including their family and develop the strategies for promoting family support.
